Teach Me: Product Review; Time4Learning Online, Interactive Curriculum
My children were given the opportunity to review the Time4Learning on-line curriculum portal. Time4Learning is a family created business that offers on-line curriculum for Pre-K through 8th Grade. Subjects included are Math, Science, Language Arts & Social Studies. There is also a "playground" at Time4Learning where students earn time to play after they've done the allotted lesson time, set up by the parent.
We have been using Time4Learning as a supplimental tool for education this summer in the Science and Social Studies categories. Social Studies is a requirement in Kentucky and often times it is hard to put this subject in a "box". With Time4Learning's complete lesson plans we were able to fit Social Studies in with a clear direction on the subject at hand. There was a clear difference between each grade level in the depth of lessons and the information provided. Planning the day was easy with their printable lesson plans and excellent record keeping of your students progress.
Pros: We really like Time4Learning for the younger grades (1st – 2nd Grade is what we used). The curriculum provided to be interactive, fun, colorful and challenging enough for our 2nd grader. Although he had just completed 1st grade, we had him start there with Science. The Social Studies program at Time4Learning doesn't start until the 2nd Grade so he went one to the 2nd grade Social Studies with no issues at all. The program was interesting enough to engage him and keep him interested in what was being presented. He would often ask to do more Time4Learning after he had already completed an assignment for the day. This was a big bonus for us as we've learned more through the Time4Learning curriculum how he's wired and how he learns best.
So, if you have a student that is better with sensory, hearing, seeing and animation to keep learning interesting, I would say this program is right for you. Although we won't be using it exclusively in the upcoming year with him, we'll be using it for some of his subjects.
Cons: We didn't care for the program for our oldest son 4th & 5th Grade. We used Time4Learning's Science & Social Studies for him. It seems as if the upper grade levels 4-8th grade aren't as interactive and require a lot of online reading. This didn't hold his attention at all. He often made comments that he wished it was a little more "fun" to learn like his brother was doing in the younger grade levels.
We also had many issues with the lessons. The informatin would be presented in one lesson. He would quiz, know the information and then the program would move to the next lesson. Except it didn't really move forward with very much new information just the same information worded differently. This proved to be very frustrating to him as he felt like he was wasting his time reading the same material all over again.
Overall we've decided to continue to use Time4Learning in our home with our youngest student at the 2nd and 3rd grade level. The Playground is a great motivator for him. He loves that the timer is set for his lesson time and if he works hard he earns time at the playground to play interactive and fun games. I like the option to use this for a supplemental resource and use while we're traveling as Time4Learning is available on the go, wherever you can log in with access to the internet.
