Sustainable Shopping & a Giveaway! Kootsac Re-usable Food Bags

Please welcome Morgen the designer and creator behind Kootsac. The original re-usable bulk food bags.

Why did you decide to start this business?
I was inspired to start making these bags when I realized one day how many plastic bags are used just for bulk food and produce. I did a lot of research to see if anyone was making re-usable bags and all I found were small cotton ones with a drawstring. I am a textile artist and clothing designer and felt that I could come up with some alternative for this problem.  I designed these bags and have been selling them locally since last spring and online since Valentines Day this year.

What exactly is a Kootsac?
A  Kootsac is a re-usable bulk food bag. The larger ones can be used for produce as well. They are made of rip stop nylon and are available in a variety of bright and fun colors. I also have a biodegradable version made of 100% silk. They are lightweight, washable, re-usable and fasten with a twist tie.

Why is it important for consumers to use re-usable bags?
Every day millions of plastic bags enter our landfill or are left to pollute our   waterways, cities and countryside. These bags eventually break down into tiny toxic pieces, which poison our land and water, and threaten the health of wildlife and ourselves. Personally I use somewhere between 4 and 10 bulk and produce bags a week. This amounts to hundreds of bags a year. Imagine how many plastic bags can be avoided if we all used re-usable bags instead.

What do you suggest using a Kootsac for?

I designed these bags specifically for bulk food like flour, nuts, dried fruit, lentils, herbs and spices. The idea is to use these instead of the plastic bags provided at the grocery store. They are designed to be fastened with a twist tie. Many stores require that you write the bin number on the tie. They are also great for carrying snack food and they work well for holding food when on a hike or camping adventure.

  1. I really like the red ones the best as my kitchen is decorated in red and it would make the bags stand out in a sea of clear-ish grocery bags.
I would, of course, use my Kootsac for grocery trips, to put bulk and even produce in. I would also use them to carry my lunch to work in; they seem perfect for that. And for picnics and hikes… and to give for gifts! My little brother would LOVE a set of these!
    Great giveaway! Thanks!

  2. thats just such a good idea. I don’t know how many bazillions of little plastic bags we’ve wasted over the years. great blog.

  3. I love the yellow ones! And as for using them…I am currently living in Mexico where the reusable bag idea has not caught on. Everytime I go to the store I always bring my own bag and I tell them I don’t want plastic bags no one seems to understand this. I’ve even had the clerks put things in plastic bags and then put them in my fabric bag no matter how much explaining I do. Anyways these would come in handy when I go to the market. Whenever I buy my veggies and stuff there, I don’t use a bag unless they are smaller items like beans. But whenever I hand the items for the seller to weigh they get put into little plastic bags. So these would be great to bring with me and avoid that whole problem. This is a great idea!

  4. I would love to win the green kootsac bags! I try to be as eco-friendly as I can… I always bring re-usable shopping bags and don’t use the small plastics for cukes and broccoli and the like….but these would be great for GRAPES! They kind of need a bag, don’t you think? Also, snap peas for sure!! These would stay in my trunk for my shopping trips and I will feel GREAT that I am doing my small part to eliminate waste.

  5. These are so great! I guess I’d choose red though they are all perfect. I’d use them for all of my bulk and produce purchases wherever I go – and keep a couple in my bag to have on hand at all times.

  6. ooooh! oooh! oooooh! pick me! pick me! I’d LOVE a set of MIXEd colors~ i’m a rainbow kinda girl (you can probably tell from my art!) I would TOTALLY use these! i already have about 10 cloth grocery bag & i NEED these to complete my set! LOVE THEMMMM!!!! going to go link to you on my blog right now!
    peace&love.

  7. Oh, I think I would have to choose a mixed set because I just can’t make up my mind! I would use mine at the market–both super and farmer’s–for produce. Great idea!

  8. Those are awesome! I like all the colors… red and blue, if I had to choose. I could think of lots of ways to use them- I would probably start out with lentils and rice!
