ART STORIES: Mrs Eliot Books

Hey everyone!
Welcome to a new feature here at Vintage Indie. The summer is coming soon and I'll be working from home with my two sweet boys. I've decided to take the day on Thursdays to spend the entire day with them, so stop by here on Thursdays for this new feature and then we'll see you back again on Friday.

Something that invigorates me more than anything about what I do here at Vintage Indie, is getting to know the person behind the business and their creations. I hope with our newest feature Art Stories we can get to know them even more through personal stories and a peek into their workspace. Most of the artists featured will have some sort of vintage tie or family trade history.

Art Stories
We're talking with the artist, designer & creator themselves about
their chosen medium. Get to know them behind the scenes and find inspiration through their personal stories of creativity.

Today I would like to introduce you to Francesca of Mrs Eliot Books.

What is your preferred medium?

I work
predominantly with paper collage, although I also love to use paint and
pencil too. I like how bare pencil looks on white painted wood and I
like the juxtaposition of that with the larger patterned shapes I use.

How did you get started?

I
had worked in various areas of the arts for a few years but office life
didn’t suit me and I wanted to find a way to be able to work from home
creatively. I had been working on my little wooden books for a while
but didn’t know how to sell them – Etsy popped up at just the right
time and helped me get my work out there.

Who or what inspires you?

Very
random things, sometimes just one odd shape can spin off a whole
project. Words and sentences inspire me too, and overheard
conversations.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into this medium?

Experiment and don’t destroy or discard accidents. They may inspire something new at another time.

Does vintage play a role in your art or life? If so, how?

In
my life I collect vintage teacups and ceramics, which in turn inspires
my work, so it comes full circle. I love mid-century patterns and
shapes so a Cathrineholm bowl might pop up in a collage, and my new
collectibles tea towel is inspired partly by items from the lovely
vintage shop H is for Home

Thank you to Francesca for a lovely interview and a closer look at your work.
