After I Do: Tips on Making the Most of Your Newlywed Rental
The Indie Wedding Guide would like to welcome Lara Fishman of Designers Call

design dilemmas. Lara Fishman is an experience interior design expert

It’s not like
it used to be. Most newlyweds can’t afford to buy a new house
right off the bat. So what can you do to your cramped little rental
to have a big impact without busting your bank account and costing
you your rental deposit?
-
Big Impact, Small Cost.
Paint is cheap. So is wallpaper. And if you choose correctly, you
can transform your first apartment together into an elegant and
sophisticated home.
2. Take a Cue from Your Wedding
Gown. Remember how much time it took you to find the perfect
wedding gown? Well, finding the right white for your home is just
as subtle. Not all whites are created equal. Very pure bright
whites (like Benjamin Moore’s Super White) tend to work best
with minimal interiors and super modern furnishings, whereas more
traditional furnishings crafted from dark antique woods look better
when paired with creamier whites with a hint of yellow, gold, or
taupe (such as Linen White). Just as you spent time choosing the
perfect gown, spend some time identifying the perfect white (whether
it be Linen, Decorator’s, White Dove, Moonlight, Cloud, China,
etc.). It makes all the difference in pulling together your space.
3. Color Yourself Happy.
It’s a scientific fact that the right color can impact one’s
mood and outlook. To create a vibrant and happy space, it’s
not necessarily about using monochromatic bright colors everywhere,
but rather pairing bright with subtle. The yin and yang. Pairing
bright turquoise with rich chocolates, teals with persimmon,
lavender with citrus, purple with navy. Just as you and your
husband make the perfect match, pairing the perfectly complimentary
bright and subtle colors can make your home burst with happiness. A
great way to make colors pop is to paint one feature wall with color
(bold peacock blue) and place a banana yellow couch in front if it.
When you move, you can take the couch!
4. Easy Peasy Wallpaper.
Wallpaper can be a labor intensive prospect, and costly if you have
to leave it when you move on. But thankfully, today there are tons
of different removable wallpaper products. Transform a blah-blah
powder room into a stunning conversation piece by papering a feature
wall in a bold, bright print. Then remove it in less than 15
minutes when you need to move.
5. Think Big.
Mostrentals are pretty small. Create the sensation of space and height
by defining the center of the room. Keep the space in the middle of
the room and build the rest of the interior around it. Central
focal points seem to “radiate” spaciousness. Moreover,
you can move freely in it.
6. Be True to a Budget.
Berealistic in setting spending limits. Ask yourself: “will
this be forever?” Saving money now for a better selection
down the road is always a smart option. This is why the amazing
Swedes invented IKEA.
